4/9/2019 0 Comments History of BracesIt is always interesting and informative to look at the origins of something that has been a regular part of life for a long time. Our dentists our staff enjoy sharing the history of some typical dental treatments and procedures with our patients.
Many of our patients are surprised to learn that the very first culture to attempt braces was that of the ancient Egyptians somewhere around 500 BC. At that time, their methods were very similar to modern dentistry. The ancient dentist's used cords pulled tightly through metal brackets to push teeth into place. The ancient Greeks and the Romans both used various methods to straighten teeth. Near 1000 BC, Greeks tried straightening teeth belonging to deceased people. Not many years later, we have records of Romans attempting to adjust the teeth of living patients with varying results. During the Dark Ages, no noteworthy orthodontic advances took place. However, during the reign of King Charles X the King’s dentist Mr. Pierre Bourdet revived interest in dentistry. Bourdet discovered that tooth crowding decreased after removing a patient’s wisdom teeth. In 1757 Bourdet wrote “The Dentist’s Art” which influenced those who came after him. From 1757 until the 1890s dentists believed that the best way to fix overcrowded teeth by removing teeth. In 1900, the term braces described a series of metal wires and brackets anchored to teeth with the hope of guiding the teeth into a proper position. For decades, braces changed but in the 1970’s using stainless steel and applying dental adhesive helped reduce the pain of braces exponentially. As time moved forward to the 21st century, technology brought about clear and tooth colored braces as well as the revolutionary product, Invisalign. 8/1/2018 0 Comments Types of Braces for AdultsFor decades braces and teenagers went together like a hand in a glove. However, at our office, we now see just as many adults getting braces as teens. This influx of adult orthodontic patients is related to some of the new and discrete kinds of braces we offer our patients. Our dentists are current with the latest and best ways of giving our patients the braces they need for the smile they want.
The braces we offer work well for our teenage and adult patients. While some types may be preferable to certain patients, our dentist will guide your decision to be sure your braces will give you the best results. Here are a few different types of braces that are popular with our patients. TYPES OF BRACES • Wired Braces- The wired braces offered today are smaller and less noticeable than braces used years ago. These are used to remedy many orthodontic issues. Wired braces made up of brackets, an affixing agent, an archwire, and elastic ligature bands. These work together to create a consistent pressure designed to move the teeth into the correct position. • Self-ligating braces- These wired braces rely on a device similar to a door to adjust the pressure on the teeth. Aside from having no elastic bands, these work the same way regular wired braces do to correct your teeth. • Clear braces- These braces are either clear or tooth-colored material, so they are nearly invisible. This is the most notable distinction that sets clear braces apart from wired braces; both kinds of braces straighten teeth the same way. • Lingual braces- Lingual braces work the same way as regular wired braces. However, the brackets and wires attach on the inside of your mouth to your teeth. INVISALIGN ALIGNMENT TRAYS- Technically, the Invisalign system is not a type of braces, but they give our patients the orthodontic correction needed to have beautiful teeth. This system has no wires or brackets. Invisalign works with customized clear plastic trays which push teeth into the right position. We can help you create the smile of your dreams. Call our office to schedule a no-obligation consultation with or dentist to learn which kind of braces will work best for you. 3/26/2018 0 Comments How Do Lingual Braces Work? When a patient comes to our office wanting braces, they have more options for orthodontics than ever before. We have years of experience improving patients’ smiles and can help you decide which type of braces are best for you.
One type of braces that patients ask our East LA Dentist about is lingual braces. These are a type of braces placed behind the patient’s teeth. They function in a similar way to conventional braces. A patient receiving lingual braces will find that there are not many differences between regular braces and lingual braces. Generally speaking, lingual braces and traditional braces use the same components, in the same way, to achieve the same results. Both kinds of braces have wires, brackets, connecting elements, and rubber bands. Lingual braces work by using force to move your teeth into the correct position in your mouth and require regular tightening and adjusting much the same as traditional braces. The lingual braces usually take the same amount of time as conventional braces to straighten teeth and are an option for adults as well as our younger patients. Despite the similarities between lingual and traditional braces, there are a few factors to think about before you decide which type of braces is best for you. • Meticulous oral hygiene with braces is crucial. The brackets provide excellent hiding spots for bacteria and the build-up of plaque. If you choose lingual braces, you must actively commit to an excellent oral care regimen. It is much more difficult to see the braces when brushing and flossing so you will need to take extra time and be sure you are thorough. Adding an anti-cavity mouthwash to your daily routine is a good idea, but it will not replace careful brushing and flossing. • Lingual braces require a longer period of time for a patient to adjust to the new braces. Tongue irritation and minor speech difficulties are common during the time that you spend breaking the braces in and becoming familiar with them. We find that our patients who choose lingual braces are pleased with the braces, and with their results. Our staff will gladly give you more information about all types of braces, including lingual braces, to help you make an informed choice. Your perfect smile is just a call away. 8/14/2017 0 Comments Benefits of Metal BracesOrthodontic procedures can do wonders in improving the appearance of your teeth and protecting your overall dental health. Many new orthodontic treatments are available, including Invisalign and clear aligners. However, conventional metal brackets and wires continue to be one of the most reliable treatments in use today. Braces offer us the ability to treat virtually any malocclusion and fine tune the position of your teeth. Each bracket is bonded to an individual tooth, and the wires can be adjusted according to the treatment plan to create the desired results. While clear aligners are versatile and used in many ways to treat complex smiles, they are not typically able to address certain severe bite abnormalities. For these cases, conventional brackets and wires are usually recommended. Patients who want more discreet options might benefit from ceramic, clear or lingual brackets. An increasing number of adults are turning to braces and other orthodontic treatments to improve their smiles and correct their bites. Virtually anyone with healthy teeth and gums can be a candidate for braces if they have teeth that are not aligned properly or are gapped or crowded. Teeth can move at any age, and even if you had braces in the past, if they have shifted or drifted out of place, they can be moved again. Adult braces can help you avoid serious dental problems by correcting bite abnormalities and reducing the risk of TMJ disorders and other issues. They can also space teeth properly, making them easy to clean and less vulnerable to decay and periodontal disease. Finally, braces for adults can make you feel more confident. People with crooked, badly aligned teeth often try to hide their smiles and are embarrassed about how their teeth look. Braces not only correct your bite and alignment; they also straighten your teeth and give you a smile of which you can be proud. You don’t have to hide your smile any longer. Call our dental office today to schedule your consultation and learn more about how adult braces can transform your smile. Self-ligating braces are a revolutionary type of braces that eliminate the need for elastics to secure the arch wire to the brackets. Instead, the wires are attached directly to the brackets with a special clip, allowing them to slide freely. They are available with conventional metal braces, or with ceramic or clear braces for the solution that works for you. The brackets are even sometimes smaller than those used for traditional treatment.
The arch wire used with these braces may be thick or thin depending on your needs. The thinner arch wire is used with passive brackets, which allow for freer tooth movements. Active brackets use thicker wires for stronger pressure and more consistent results. The clip used by these special braces reduces the amount of pressure needed to move the tooth, which also reduces the number of adjustments that you will need. Chair time is also often reduced, since there are no elastics to switch. If you are a candidate for conventional braces, you will likely also benefit from these braces as well. Our dentist in San Francisco can help you decide on the best orthodontic solution for your smile, which can include either self-ligating or conventional braces. Call our office today to learn more or to schedule your consultation with our orthodontist. 5/12/2017 0 Comments How Visible are Ceramic Braces? The biggest complaint about braces is that their metal brackets and wires are hugely noticeable. This has caused many patients to avoid their orthodontic health, which can be a very dangerous choice. Fortunately, modern orthodontics now offers a few different braces options that are much less noticeable. One of these options is ceramic braces.
When braces brackets are made of ceramic, they are able to blend in with the teeth perfectly. Our orthodontists in Rocklin can even use translucent bands that wrap around the brackets to keep the wire in place. These aspects together make ceramic braces much less noticeable than traditional ones. Ceramic braces are placed on the teeth in exactly the same way as other types. Depending on your orthodontic needs, you may even be a candidate for self-ligating ceramic braces. This appliance utilizes brackets that are able to control the wires on their own. This means that you will require fewer appointments, and the brackets can be smaller. If you are ignoring your need for orthodontic work because you are worried about how they will make your smile look, it is important to keep in mind that there are many options that are less noticeable than basic braces. You can learn more about them on our site or at an appointment. Early orthodontics is often recommended for younger patients with bite irregularities. Considering the fact that many patients wear braces later on, during adolescence or adulthood, you may wonder why early orthodontic treatments would be beneficial. Here is a look at how effective this approach is. Bite Correction Braces are just as effective at moving the teeth of children as they are at moving the teeth of adults. Children benefit immediately from a lowered risk of oral health problems, such as gum disease and tooth decay. At the same time, kids enjoy a better-looking smile that can support their social development. Growth Support A key feature of early orthodontics is its ability to help promote good orofacial development over time. Even long after wearing braces, children may have better tooth eruption and positioning thanks to the corrections that orthodontics made earlier. This can pave the way to a smile that looks better during adulthood than it would have if braces were used later. Early orthodontics is an excellent option for many patients. You can schedule a consultation with our orthodontist in Rocklin to learn more about early braces treatments at our office. 12/28/2016 0 Comments Different Braces OptionsPatients who want straight teeth can attain their goal in several ways today.
