7/13/2017 0 Comments Does TMJ get worse with pregnancy? Is there anything more frustrating than being told to relax? For expectant mothers suffering from TMJ, it can be incredibly excruciating to experience tender jaw. Often, TMJ is stress induced and can be difficult to combat without guidance from a medical professional. Our TMJ doctor specializes in treating temporomandibular joints to relieve patients of severe inflammation.
TMJ is pain located in the joint that connects your jaw to your skull. Those with this condition experience headaches, locked jaw, difficulty chewing, and, in certain cases, discomfort when speaking. Pregnant women in particular are prone to this condition because they are more susceptible to swelling. To combat swelling and decrease the likelihood of developing TMJ, pregnant women should stay active avoid constrictive clothes, stay hydrated, and soak in cold water. Anyone who has ever been affected by TMJ knows just how painful it can be. If left untreated, TMJ can lead to intense headaches, tinnitus, and shoulder and neck pain. Luckily, there are a variety of solutions including physical therapy, mouth guards, medications, and surgical options. If you have symptoms of TMJ it is a good idea to talk to your doctor about potential treatments to find out the best option for you.

2/1/2017 0 Comments Is TMJ Hereditary?TMJ disorder is often categorized as a psychological condition due to its diffuse nature. Added to which, afflictions of the temporomandibular joint can be hard to diagnose because of a distinct lack of genetics.
However, this does not mean that TMJ cannot be caused indirectly by genetic malformations of the jaw. Any malocclusion (bite irregularity) that may be passed on from your family could cause your temporomandibular to malfunction. This would mean that while you were not born with a defective temporomandibular, you were born with another weakness that left this joint vulnerable. Orthodontics can be hereditary, and a lot of TMJ symptoms relate to open bite, bruxism, or lateral tongue thrust. These things can reposition or damage the teeth, increasing the temporomandibular’s work load. Mental illness can also be inherited, and how you handle this increased risk of anxiety can either put your temporomandibular function at equally-increased risk, or ensure you stay pain-free. Antidepressants are also useful as pain relief, and counseling is often recommended by our Los Angeles TMJ expert for patients whose mental health has been recently endangered. Sudden loss or drastic change is known to produce referred pain and TMJ symptoms. Further study must be done to determine how much, if any, of TMJ disorder is traceable to genetics. 1/31/2017 0 Comments How Can TMJ Be Treated?Mysterious as TMJ disorder is, it does have a diversity of treatments, all of which you can use in consultation with your doctor. Of course it depends on the severity of your symptoms, but proper organization can keep you on a linear treatment path that hopefully ends with a permanent lessening of your TMJ difficulty.
You may want to start with ordinary pain reliever, making sure it’s non-steroidal. If you don’t have any luck, your doctor may prescribe something stronger. As stress and anxiety can be factors in TMJ, you may wish to enter counseling if your symptoms coincide with a drastic change or loss in your life. Tricyclic antidepressants can also be used for pain relief. Palliative care may extend through changes in diet. Eating fewer raw foods and vegetables or anything too hard or chewy can reduce your temporomandibular joint’s workload, theoretically reducing your risk of inflammation and pain. If your case is at all typical, you should be able to find relief with some combination of the above actions. If nothing’s working, your TMJ doctor may progress you into occlusal therapy, such as fitting you for a splint or mouth guard. At the extreme end of TMJ treatment are surgical therapies like arthroscopy or arthrocentesis, but these are rightfully considered by medical authorities to be last resorts. 1/11/2017 0 Comments Can Vitamin D Help with TMJ?Although not all of them are scientific, several home remedies exist for TMJ disorder. Vitamin D deficiency, however, is known to cause several different forms of malaise, including aches and pains. Because of the amorphous nature of TMJ symptoms, some patients have no idea how to articulate how they feel, except to say “something feels off”. This is why a general feeling of malaise is considered a top symptom of TMJ, and why vitamin D deficiency could be relevant.
If you wanted to take vitamin D supplements, you could do so with the understanding that very little clinical evidence exists to support their usefulness. However, the same is true of much TMJ research, which is still putting together a list of probable causes. If you feel your joint pain relates to vitamin D deficiency, taking supplements is obviously one way to find out. However, most TMJ sufferers only experience relief from a wide mix of treatments. For starters, seven out of 10 patients have been misdiagnosed. Those who receive a correct diagnosis early on can expect to see as many as seven different physicians, as TMJ disorder can have physiologic, cranio-vertebral, maxillofacial, and neurologic aspects. It affects the temporomandibular joint, which controls jaw function. Symptoms include headaches, earaches, difficulty chewing, the jaw being permanently ajar, and audible clicking or popping sounds in the jaw.
One of the key factors of TMJ is its ability to radiate dysfunction to nearby body parts, such as the head and neck. It also has a strong overlap in patients with diabetes and other autoimmune conditions. To pursue a full treatment plan, you may need to see several different doctors. Your first visit would probably be to your primary care physician. They may refer you to an oral surgeon, an otolaryngologist, or even a psychologist. TMJ symptoms often begin with an increase in stress, and counseling may recommend a lifestyle change. If your TMJ symptoms are related to a deformity or dysfunction in the jaw or bite, you may need to see a maxillofacial surgeon. Surgical practices for TMJ include arthrocentesis, the most minimally invasive, and open-joint surgery, which repairs the jaw or joint. Short of surgery, you may get by with Botox injections or ordinary pain medications. Since not a lot is known about TMJ, you can expect a lengthy timeline of appointments and proposals.
