12/9/2019 0 Comments Can Dental Implants Work for Me?Patients who are missing teeth often come to our office, believing that dentures or bridges are the only options to give them back their smile. While both of these treatments are effective in masking teeth that are missing, they do nothing to help in the long-term. A more effective procedure would be getting dental implants.
The concept behind dental implants is centuries old; early man tried various techniques to replace missing teeth. However, in the 1950s, an orthopedic surgeon from Sweden proposed using titanium rods to replace missing teeth. The idea behind dental implants was born. Since that time, modern dentistry has improved upon the idea exponentially. Today’s dental implants not only make your smile look great, but they also improve the overall health of your mouth. Many of our patients are not aware that after they lose a tooth, their body reacts to the lack of stimulation in the socket by no longer providing nutrients to the area. Eventually, bone loss occurs, and over time your face takes on a sunken look because of the bone loss. Even if you receive a dental bridge or dentures, the bone loss is inevitable because the socket is empty. When our dentist in Huntington Beach places the titanium rods in empty tooth sockets a process called osseointegration begins. The socket believes the rods are roots and they fuse to the jawbone. Because of the fusion, the body believes the area needs nutrients and blood and resumes caring for the area. This action by the body prevents future bone loss. Dental implants work well for the vast majority of our patients. Occasionally, a patient is not able to have implants. This generally happens for a few reasons. • A patient taking medication that interferes with the body’s healing process should not get dental implants while on the medication • If a patient has extreme bone loss, a dental implant may not be possible • Patients’ with a diminished ability to open their mouth may not be able to allow the dentist access for an implant If you are missing teeth and would like to learn more about dental implants, please feel free to contact our office. Our staff can give you information as well as make an appointment for a no-obligation consultation where you can learn more specific information about dental implants.

1/17/2018 0 Comments History of Tooth ImplantsThere is a wealth of information that comes with the topic of tooth implants, from how they are administered to why a person would need one. One often-overlooked aspect of this restorative device, however, is its long and storied history. Implants have certainly come a long way from their humble beginnings, becoming the refined way of replacing teeth that we all know today.
A dental implant is defined as a means of tooth replacement that requires no adjacent abutment, instead relying completely on some sort of placement into the jawbone itself, or in some cases just along its surface; over top of this self-sufficient support system is placed a crown bearing an artificial tooth meant to replicate the way the natural one did before. The first recorded evidence of this practice comes from China in the form of bamboo sticks found in the remains of patients of the past, and carbon dating indicates that these tools were used approximately four thousand years ago. Similar findings in Egypt show mummified corpses with implants made of ivory and precious metals. Other antiquated methods of the past include replacing human teeth with those of animals, or even human teeth bought on the black market. As dental and orthodontic technology became more advanced in the 19th and 20th centuries, dental implants made their rocky way through a modern infancy period. There was a great learning curve in refining it in a formal sense, and unlike more primitive takes on the concept from the past, many western attempts struggled to achieve a fully functional way of replacing teeth in this way that could serve as anything more than purely aesthetic. One of the first successful attempts of this era was the Greenfield implant. Conceived in 1913, it consisted of an iridioplatinum stake driven into the bone and topped with a crown of pure gold. Dr. Greenfield modeled his technique after the already tried-and-true method that surgeons used to place implants into the hips of patients after the time; through these means, they achieved the impossible and created a successfully osseointegrated dental implant that could be used just like a real tooth. Later, the advent of using titanium rods as leverage would be introduced by another doctor named Gottlieb Leventhal. Leventhal’s work was built upon in Sweden by a surgeon called Per-Ingvar Branemark, who was the first to formally observe and recognize the osseointegration phenomenon. Between then and now, much has changed, but the basic idea still remains the same; from sticks and stones to titanium and ceramics, dental implants have been revitalizing smiles since the earliest days of civilization. Perhaps you’ll be the next one to have one placed. 10/19/2017 0 Comments Should I Get Dental Implants? The average American between the ages of 35 and 49 is missing at least 7 teeth. Many of those teeth are not replaced. Some people don’t have dental insurance. Others have dental phobia, or an illness that makes dental care a lower priority. But restoring lost teeth has never been easier than with dental implants. Getting these instead of more traditional models like dentures or bridges can increase your quality of life going forward.
Dentures and bridges are fine treatments, but they aren’t aging well. Dentures can slip and draw the wrong kind of attention to your profile. You also have to remove them to clean them. Bridges incorporate crowns to fill vacancies by using nearby teeth as abutments. But those nearby teeth must be filed down to accommodate the crown. Implants leave adjoining teeth untouched. And by definition, they are permanent and can last a lifetime if cared for. Implants are the only product that integrates your body into the process. The false root-form is made of titanium, which is extraordinarily compatible with human bone. The resulting biomechanical occurrence is called osseointegration, and finalizes the first stage of implant surgery. Osseointegration takes about six months. After the new root fuses with your jaw, you’ll go back in for a porcelain crown. With your new implant or implants, you can smile smoothly and enjoy full functionality. Ask Dr. Shindler, cosmetic dentist in Agoura Hills, if you qualify for dental implants. Ideal candidates will have sufficient jaw density, and not have unhealthy dental habits like smoking or bruxism. Certain immunosuppressive tendencies may also be an issue. Ultimately, you should consider getting dental implants if you’ve suffered tooth loss for a non-medical reason—due to injury, substance abuse, or neglect. Implants represent a successful restart to your dental career, updating both oral and psychological health. Dental implants have a great tendency of bringing back that natural smile. There are plenty of ways which it can do that, considering the surgery and healing process. The success and failure rate does vary. What won’t is the ability of a Los Angeles tooth implants dentist to assist their patients and ensure no one is left in the dark when it comes to treatment. Success is pretty much based off of the lifespan of the prosthesis. The look, feel, and actual settling of the tooth can really help or hinder. Frequent dentist visits and maintaining good oral health can up a person’s chances.
It’s important to know what contributes to dental implant failure. The presence of tooth decay or gum disease can play a major role. Smoking has also caused issues with the process. Worst yet, are preexisting medical conditions which make the bones weaker and the body not take. A disease like diabetes causes inflammation and other problems that may prevent the implant from anchoring in. Though tooth decay isn’t a factor, peri-implantitis is—which consists of a gum disease. That makes vigilance imperative. Whatever you can attribute it to, dental implants can make a huge difference. It not only changes how a person looks, but ensures that the uniformity of the mouth is kept intact. Dental implants are made to replace lost teeth using artificial roots that are firmly anchored by the jaw. Our Beverly Hills tooth implant dentist can use implants to replace individual or multiple teeth, depending on your needs. If you are missing multiple teeth, implants can be used with an implant-supported bridge or a removable partial denture.
With an implant-supported fixed bridge, the implants are used much like abutment teeth. Instead of relying on the teeth for support, the crowns that are attached to the pontics of the bridge, or the artificial teeth, will rely on the implants. An implant-supported denture will work similarly. The denture will use clasps or attachments that will connect to the implants. This will allow the denture to be secured by the jaw rather than by adjacent teeth, and it will be stronger and more stable each time you bite and chew. Implants offer other benefits as well. They can keep the bone tissue stimulated and prevent atrophy, which often occurs after tooth loss. They can reduce the stress on teeth that can occur when restorations must depend on them for stability. Losing a tooth can set off a chain reaction of dental issues that can result in more lost teeth, and eventually, you could be facing total tooth loss. Although dental implants are considered the best way to replace lost teeth, many people worry that there is no such thing as affordable dental implants. In fact, there are quite a few affordable dental implant solutions.
1. Customizing your implants Single dental implants are often restored with porcelain crowns. This results in an incredibly natural smile, but it is not the only option. In fact, dental implants can also be used to support with dental bridges and dentures, both of which are more affordable than individual porcelain crowns and might be a good option for you. 2. Mini implants If you are not a candidate for full implants or you do not want to have bone grafts, mini implants might be a good option. Mini implants are smaller and more affordable than full-size implants and can still support dentures for a completely restored smile. 3. All on four These implants are designed to support dentures using only four carefully positioned implants, which lowers the cost compared to full mouth implants. Call our Los Angeles tooth implant doctor today to learn more about affordable tooth implant options or to schedule an appointment with our team. Our teeth are very strong – one of the hardest parts of our body, actually. But unfortunately, we don’t always take the best care of them, and accidents do happen. When our teeth become damaged, they can be restored. Here are some common treatments done in restorative dentistry.
If a tooth develops a cavity, our West Hollywood cosmetic dentist will work to remove the decayed tissue. That now empty space can be replaced with dental filling, or the entire tooth can be capped with a dental crown. Fillings or crowns can be used in several situations. For example, a tooth that has been treated with a root canal must be covered with a crown in order to restore its functionality. Dental bonding is used for both cosmetic and restorative purposes. It can be used to create the appearance that crooked teeth are straight, and to smoothen out uneven surface areas. Bonding is also used to cover exposed tooth roots, and fill in chips and cracks. The placement of dental implants is also considered a restorative procedure. This is the best way to replace missing teeth, as a dental implant works to reverse the effects of tooth loss. To learn more about various restorative treatments, talk to our West Hollywood dentist today. 3/15/2017 0 Comments Success Rate of Dental ImplantsDental implants are considered the most modern response to tooth failure, especially for teeth that fall outside endodontic help. But are dental implants safe? Root canal therapy is preferred by many dentists, but this process does not apply to teeth removed forcibly by accident, or lost due to illness or simple aging.
Implants can reasonably be said to have a lifespan of 20 years, due to a remarkable success rate of 95 to 98 percent for single implants. This means your jaw is highly unlikely to reject the implant after installation and osseointegration. Some patients with low bone density, or an insufficient jaw floor, may need bone grafts to facilitate their implants. Bone grafting means additional cost and time, obviously. But the augmentation could boost the life expectancy of your implant by 2 percentage points, studies show. By definition, single implants have a slightly higher guarantee than multiple implants. More implants simply mean more variables to account for. The chief component in dental implants, titanium, is not only one of the strongest materials on earth but fuses admirably well with human bone. This enables our Beverly Hills dental implant dentist to sink an anchor you can depend on, one that can carry your new tooth through up to 20 years of your life. 2/21/2017 0 Comments Pros and Cons of Dental ImplantsIn the past, missing teeth were typically replaced with dental bridges or dentures. While these can be good options, a more permanent solution can be found with dental implants that are secured directly into the jaw.
Because implants are placed into the bone, they stay in place better than dentures. The implants act like tooth roots and will actually fuse with the bone to prevent loss of tissue that can occur after teeth are removed. The permanence of implants also means that you will have continuous support to facial tissue as well. Because implants are attached in the bone of the jaw, there is no need to damage surrounding teeth to hold them in place. Implants look just like your natural teeth and can be easily cleaned in the same way. You will be able to eat all of your favorite foods. Also, because implants are securely attached, there is no risk of slippage while eating or speaking resulting in increased confidence. As with any procedure, there can be drawbacks. The process can be time-consuming and costly. Infection can occur in the jaw. If you do not have enough bone tissue, grafts might be required prior to implants. For more about implants, contact our dentist. If you have a tooth that is so damaged that it need to be removed, you might wonder what your options are. If you leave a gap in your smile, other teeth can shift position toward the open space. A gap in between your teeth from a missing tooth can also decrease your confidence in social situations. You do not have to settle for a partial denture that is attached with wires to surrounding teeth or a dental bridge that can damage surrounding teeth when you can have a dental implant instead.
Dental implants are a great choice when you need to replace a single tooth near the front of your mouth. An implant is also good if you want to keep the integrity of bone and tooth structure in the jaw and the rest of your teeth are strong and healthy. Implants are sometimes the best choice even when you must replace multiple teeth. If you have a hard time dealing with slippage and improper fit from dentures but still have good bone structure in the jaw, implants might be a better option for you. Talk with your dental care provider for more information. |
