4/3/2017 0 Comments How is Gingivitis Diagnosed?Gingivitis is a common form of gum disease. It is also the mildest form of the condition, meaning many people are unaware that they have it. Without treatment, gingivitis can cause gums to detach from the teeth and progress to more advanced stages of gum disease, which can lead to tooth and bone loss.
Symptoms of gingivitis often include: • Red or inflamed gums • Puffy, swollen gums • Sensitive teeth • Sensitive, tender gums • Loose teeth • A change in the way teeth fit together • A receding gum line • Pus along the gum line • Bad breath or a bad taste in the mouth Diagnosing gingivitis requires a complete periodontal evaluation. We may check your teeth and gums and take X-rays to determine if you have any decay above or below the gum line. We will measure the depth of the periodontal pockets and determine if your teeth move, which tells us if any bone loss has occurred. Our team will evaluate your symptoms and take your medical and dental history. Treatment may include a professional cleaning or a special deep cleaning procedure called scaling and root planing. You will also need to address any deficiencies in your at-home hygiene routine to prevent a recurrence.
